Litter-Robot Error After Cleaning? A Safe Troubleshooting Guide

An error immediately after cleaning often points to something that changed during the job: position, weight, drawer-liner shape, reassembly, debris, or moisture. Start with the exact light or app message instead of trying random resets.

Safety stop
If liquid entered the powered base or control panel, keep the unit unplugged and contact Whisker. Do not power it on “to see if it works.” The same stop rule applies to damaged wiring, cracked powered parts, heat, smoke, or a globe that cannot move freely.

First, record what the machine is actually saying

  • The model: Litter-Robot 3, 4, 5, or 5 Pro
  • The full light color and pattern, LCD text, or exact app notification
  • Whether the globe is Home, paused mid-cycle, or physically obstructed
  • What was removed, washed, replaced, or moved during cleaning
  • Whether the unit was completely dry when power was restored

Take a photo or screenshot before clearing the message. Whisker's support pages route owners by exact model and signal; “it is blinking” is not enough to identify the right flow.

A careful post-clean sequence

Confirm every washed part is completely dry

If there is doubt, disconnect power and wait. Do not troubleshoot around lingering moisture.

Reseat the globe and bonnet

LR3 needs its globe in the tracks, black key in the pocket, and bonnet tabs latched. LR4 needs the globe flush in the rear bearing pocket with the gear track engaged. LR5 needs the key opening up and fully in its pocket, gears engaged, and bonnet latched.

Flatten the drawer liner

On LR3, tuck the liner into its tabs and keep it from protruding over the drawer edge. On LR4 and LR5, a stretched, wrinkled, puffy, or dark bag can affect readings. Use the exact bag-fitting guidance for your model.

Check litter amount and placement

Remove any litter above the MAX line and any clump or granule obstructing movement. Make sure no mat, cord, wall, or debris is interfering with the base or feet.

Use the correct sensor method

LR3 has its own DFI-lens procedure. LR4 permits a dry cloth, brush vacuum, and gentle compressed air around curtain sensors. LR5 says dry microfiber only—no liquid, vacuum, or forced air on bezel sensors.

Zero the scale with the right control

LR3 and LR4 use Reset in their current model flows; LR5 uses a short press of Cancel after cleaning or moving the unit. Do not transfer button sequences between generations.

Run one supervised cycle

Watch the complete movement and note the first message that returns. If the same error persists, continue with Whisker's exact troubleshooting page or contact support.

Three common post-clean patterns

False drawer-full reading

Often starts with the liner or optical path. Correct the bag, clean the model's sensor as directed, reset, then follow that model's remaining DFI steps—calibrating only if its page calls for it.

New weight error

Cleaning changes weight and sometimes placement. Put the machine on a firm, level surface, free every foot, correct the litter level, and zero the scale without leaning on the unit.

Movement fault

Look for overfill, an unseated globe, bonnet, filter cover, lifted seal strip, clump, or foreign object. Never force the motor or defeat a safety sensor.

Reset is not the same as repair

A reset may clear a notification after the underlying cause is corrected; it does not fix liquid damage, a bad sensor board, worn motor, broken wire, or cracked part. If an error repeats after the official flow, give Whisker the model, serial number, exact message, photos, and the troubleshooting already completed.
