How many boxes?
A commonly used guideline is one box per cat plus one extra. A single automatic box may serve more than one cat, but an additional box gives cats more choice and reduces competition during busy periods. Many multi-cat homes pair an automatic box with at least one additional option.
Expect faster buildup
- The waste drawer fills faster — empty it more often
- The unit may benefit from deep cleaning sooner than it would in a single-cat home
- Filters and litter get used up more quickly
- Dust and residue accumulate on sensors sooner
Litter and odor strategy
Stick with hard-clumping, low-dust, strong-odor-control litter — it earns its keep under heavier use. Pair it with the layered approach in our odor guide, and empty the drawer before it fills to stay ahead of both smell and flies.
